Save small dinosaurs and other toys from thick blocks of ice! At the "Liberated from the ice" station, you will learn how you can create very cold temperatures with simple items, for example to cool your lemonade. In experiments, we explain the chemical and physical background to the freezing of water and a quiz question also awaits you here.

How does the maglev train work?

Here at the ILK Dresden, we work experimentally down to around -271 °C. Very, very low temperatures are needed, for example, to levitate magnets. We will show you how a magnetic levitation train works, which is cooled with liquid nitrogen or helium (-196 °C).

Do you know the largest thermometer in Saxony?

It is 2.40 metres high, can measure temperatures between -237.5 °C and +100 °C and is located on the facade of the Institut für Luft- und Kältetechnik gGmbH. Find out when the coldest day in Dresden was and at what temperatures quantum computers work. Simply use the QR code located right next to the thermometer at the entrance to our institute.
