Experience bioelectronics: How implants connect humans and machines

Learn about bioelectronic implants at two hands-on stations. Test your dexterity on a brain model and try to correctly position an electrode for brain stimulation. Experience how signals from your body are captured and transmitted, and use them to move another person’s arm.

Description

Find out how physicians use bioelectronic implants to treat disorders of the nervous system such as Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy. Test your dexterity on a brain model and try to correctly position an electrode for brain stimulation. You will learn about the limitations of current rigid implants and how they can be improved. To address this, researchers at the EKFZ for Digital Health at TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research are developing novel water-based materials (hydrogels) that are soft, flexible, and electrically conductive – similar to natural tissue.Try bioelectronic control yourself at another hands-on-station: experience how signals from your body are captured and transmitted, and use them to move another person’s arm.
