From the Ergometer to the Water: Virtual Rowing for Design Research

In this interactive self-test, visitors experience how a real rowing ergometer can be connected to a virtual rowing environment using a Virtual Reality headset. Two different approaches can be explored: either the participant is placed, together with the rowing machine, into a virtual boat rowing through a river landscape, or they remain visible on a virtual 3D clone of the actual rowing machine, gliding through virtual worlds.

Description

The application investigates which representation feels more convincing: the more sport-oriented and realistic boat environment with virtual oars, or the more accurate transfer of real body and machine movements into the virtual world.

The project combines Virtual Reality, sports technology, and research on body perception, demonstrating how real movement and virtual body representation can interact.
