What if structures could tell us themselves how they’re doing? Whether there is damage that isn’t visible from the outside, or how the material behaves under different loads? At Fraunhofer IKTS, we develop such systems - from smart sensors to optical fibers that measure strain in bridges with millimeter-level precision. We demonstrate and explain how research helps make our infrastructure safer.
