Information Stand: Around the World in 24 Sands

What does sand look like up close? At the information stand “Around the World in 24 Sands”, visitors can examine sand samples from around the globe under a microscope – from the Namib Desert and Hawaii to the Baltic Sea. Colours, shapes and textures reveal stories of oceans, volcanoes and deserts.

Description

The information stand “Around the World in 24 Sands” offers a small geological journey across the globe. Using two stereo microscopes, visitors can closely examine and compare sand samples from many different regions of the world.

The presentation includes beach sands from the Caribbean, the Baltic Sea and Hawaii, dune sands from Namibia, the Sahara and Iran, as well as river and volcanic sands from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Visitors can see how differently sand appears depending on its origin, climate, geology and landscape.

Under the microscope, colours, crystals, shell fragments, volcanic particles and tiny rock components become visible – details that are often invisible to the naked eye.
