Monk, Don't Get Angry - Monasteries in Games and Modern Media

The Game Salon 2026 invites you to discover history and literature through play: at analogue and digital game tables, we explore why medieval monasteries, as centres of faith and knowledge, are the perfect setting for games. At the literature game table, we’ll get to know authors from the Saxon-Czech border region through a digital children’s game and discover literary genres. You’ll show what you’ve learnt by solving tricky game challenges and taking part in a quiz.

Description

The 2026 Game Salon invites visitors to discover history and literature through play:
At the "History" game tables, you can learn about monasteries through play. Together we want to discover that medieval monasteries were not only centers of faith and knowledge, but also ideal for playing games. In a monastery you live by fixed rules - just as every game has its rules.
Mysterious abbeys, beer-brewing monks, warlike nuns, vanishing books. Various analog and digital games will be used to show how monasteries can be represented here.

At the “Literature” game table, exploring literature becomes a (digital) kids’ game: Through exciting stories, we get to know authors from the Saxon-Czech border region and discover literary genres and eras. By solving tricky game challenges and taking the quiz, you can show off what you’ve learned.
In addition, there is a poster exhibition on history and stories in analogue and digital games.

Program:
Throughout: Poster and game exhibition; comic book corner with monastery comics; monastery tours in digital games and the "Literature" game table.
