Description

The palaeobotany section of the Senckenberg Natural History Collections Dresden is dedicated to the study of fossil plants and prehistoric ecosystems. For decades, one of its main research focuses has been fossil leaf floras and the reconstruction of ancient vegetation and climate conditions.

The programme centres on petrified wood and plant fossils from the Cretaceous period. Visitors gain insights into the formation of petrified forests and learn how palaeobotanical research helps reconstruct ancient environments and ecosystems. Microscopic structures of fossil wood can also be examined in detail.

Collection staff members present selected objects and provide information about research, preparation techniques and scientific work with fossil plants.
