Description
Due to the high complexity and variability of cancer, therapeutic strategies tailored to each patient’s specific condition are becoming increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry. A prerequisite for developing such “personalized” therapies is a thorough understanding of the mechanisms underlying cancer development and its complex biology. Imaging techniques in particular, such as positron emission tomography (PET) or single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), are important tools for localizing pathological tissue changes and form the basis for the application of radionuclide therapeutics. We demonstrate how the underlying mechanisms are being researched and radioactive substances developed for the targeted diagnosis and treatment of cancer at the Institute for Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.
