Smell and Taste

The sense of smell is important. For example, we react to the body odors of those around us – our nose determines whom we like. The perception of scents and the perception of aromas in food are important to our quality of life!

At our booth, you'll learn how your sense of smell and taste works! We'll show you the inside of your nose and will be happy to explain the processes involved in perceiving scents.

Description

The sense of smell is important. We react, for example, to the body odors of those around us – our nose determines who we can "smell." The perception of scents and the perception of aromas in food mean quality of life! And smell also influences our working lives: For example, perfumers, bakers, and cooks absolutely rely on their sense of smell! And the sense of smell is important for detecting fire/smoke or spoiled food. Life is significantly poorer without smell!

At the Interdisciplinary Center for Smell and Taste, we study the effects of smells, for example, on sleep or the eating behavior of premature babies. Another main topic is the diagnosis and treatment of olfactory disorders, for example, in patients with neurodegenerative diseases or patients with olfactory disorders after an acute respiratory infection or after chemotherapy.

You can learn how your sense of smell and taste works at our booth! We'll show you the inside of your nose and explain the processes involved in perceiving scents. And what happens when your sense of smell stops working! And how it can be treated!
