Synthetic Biology – promises and peril

Synthetic biology is the newest branch of modern applied molecular biology. Although still in its early stages, the first successes are already raising great hopes and fears. Are we looking forward to a new future in which microbial, cell-based “biofactories” give humanity new medicines and independence from fossil fuels? Or are we about to cross a line by becoming “creators of life” ourselves?
