Air liquefaction by cryocooler

Cryocoolers use a working gas that is subjected to periodic pressure changes. Cyclical displacement of the working gas generates a warm and a cold side on the cryocooler. The latter can reach temperatures below the condensation temperature of oxygen and nitrogen (-196 °C). The condensation process is visualised in a Plexiglas vessel.

description

In a refrigeration machine, a temperature difference is generated by applying work. A cryocooler uses a working gas for this purpose, which is subjected to a periodic pressure change. Cyclical displacement of the working gas within the cryocooler generates a warm and a cold side on the cryocooler. The latter can reach temperatures below the condensation temperature of oxygen and nitrogen (-196 °C). The condensation process is visualised in a Plexiglas vessel. Incidentally, as part of the "Superconducting high-current system for DC applications" research project, the ILK Dresden developed a high-performance cryocooler based on the pulse tube (PT) principle, which can be used to realise significantly higher efficiency. www.ilkdresden.de/leistungen/forschung-und-entwicklung/projekt/pulse-tube-kryokuehler
