description

Our smartphone has long been able to see and hear - for example, by recognising our face and speech. Smelling, on the other hand, has hardly been digitised yet. Yet smells surround us everywhere and subtly influence many areas of our lives: Food does not taste good without smells, without a nose we would notice dangers, such as a fire, much too late, and we even choose our partners according to body odour, among other things. At the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, we are researching in an interdisciplinary team on sensors that can learn to smell. With such technology, the refrigerator of the future could detect spoiled food, for example, or the oven could tell us when the pizza is ready. At this year's Long Night of Science, you can look forward to a colourful and interactive programme on the topic of smelling. While it gets exciting indoors with experiments and puzzles, you can relax in the garden and have a non-alcoholic cocktail mixed - just the way you like it! You can find more details at the respective programme points.
