description

Synthetic biology is the newest branch of modern applied molecular biology. Although still in its early stages, the first successes are already raising great hopes and fears. Are we looking forward to a new future in which microbial, cell-based “biofactories” give humanity new medicines and independence from fossil fuels? Or are we about to cross a line by becoming “creators of life” ourselves? This short lecture aims to explain the term synthetic biology objectively and illustrate the current possibilities using a few selected examples.
