floating sand in magnetic fields

Flying an object by magnet is not only a fascinating phenomenon but also a routine technique used to harvest valuable mineral particles, waste water treatment and so on. The lifting force is the so called Kelvin force. In this experiment, you will see visually and get to know how to fly and manipulate a “non-magnetic” SiO2 (sand) particle with small permanent magnet.
