Fear of Crime and its Causes. Findings from Saxony

Safety is a tricky thing: studies have repeatedly shown that the fear of crime is only weakly linked to the actual crime rate. But what else does "perceived safety" depend on - personal socio-economic circumstances, structural and social conditions of the residential environment or even general insecurities about the state of society? The results of a recent population survey in Saxony provide insights into this question.

description

Safety is a tricky thing: studies have repeatedly shown that the fear of crime is only weakly linked to the actual crime rate. Other factors such as the structural and social conditions of the residential environment, personality and specific living conditions seem to have a greater influence on how much people fear crime.

However, many questions remain unanswered with regard to the causes of the perception of safety. To answer them, the Saxon Institute for Police and Security Research (SIPS) conducted a representative survey of the Saxon residential population in summer 2022. Combined with a wide range of regional and municipal data (including on the labor market situation, crime rates and club density), the results of the survey provide differentiated insights into the complex causal structures behind "perceived safety". There is a clear correlation with the objective security situation on the ground. In addition, the perception of safety is fed by a culture of trust and intact social network structures in the residential area. However, political attitudes and trust in institutions are also linked to the fear of crime.

In the talk, the scientists behind the study will present the results. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the findings of the study.
